Prologue:

Bienvenidos a este último trayecto de mi viaje en donde regreso a SFO en un 744 de UA.

Después de mi llegada de HND, me quedé en el hotel Langham PEK y a la mañana siguiente tomé el shuttle de regreso al aeropuerto..

Llego a la masiva terminal 3 y busco el mostrador de UA.

CA maneja las operaciones de UA y una agente eficiente pero robótica me registró en la línea premier. No hubo sonrisa ni charla.

Había una línea enorme en el control de pasaportes pero la línea finalmente se mueve. Una vez que llego al oficial este me preguntó sobre la parte del formulario que tenía mi información de salida. Recuerdo que al llegar a PEK Immigración tomó esa parte del formulario y no lo devolvió así que pensé que no era necesario. El oficial trató de buscar uno en su cabina pero no encontró ninguno así que me ordenó que obtuviera uno de una del escritorio . Rápidamente llené uno y le pregunté a uno de los miembros del personal que controlaba la línea si me dejaría estar al frente por lo que sucedió. Ella me dirigió a otra línea y procedió a cerrarla detrás de mí diciéndome que me quedara allí. Un par de minutos después otro agente selló mi pasaporte y me dirigía a la seguridad. La seguridad fue un gran inconveniente y fueron muy minuciosos. Mi equipaje de mano fue revisado 3 veces y tuve que vaciar las pertenencias en un contenedor.

Una vez al otro lado me dirigí a la sala Business de CA . Por cierto descubrí que si uno tiene Priority Pass puedes elegir entre la sala J o F. La terminal es enorme y un ambiente de tranquilidad se percata a pesar del caos exterior. El pequeño jardín en la esquina es una adición que se aprecia y es a la misma vez acogedora.

Se ha dicho y escrito mucho sobre las salas VIP de los aeropuertos en PEK pero prefiero experimentarlo por mi mismo antes de poder formular una opinión. No tuve ningún problema para encontrar esta sala y el registro fue rápido. Encontré el interior espacioso con asientos vacíos a lo largo del pasillo con un bar de autoservicio. Hay un área de buffet justo después de entrar pero esta está reservada solo para bocadillos. Los platos fuertes se encuentran en la parte posterior. Cuando llegué tenían una variedad de platos calientes y al vapor. Había un pequeño mostrador con algo de sushi que parecía ser de calidad industrial y había que conseguir un asistente para que te los sirviera. Si no encuentras la comida lo suficientemente sabrosa supongo que puedes salir y bajar a Pizza Hut o KFC.

Recepción.

Buffet después de la entrada con selecciones limitados.

Bar.

Buffet.

Bocadillos.

Avistamiento de aviones.

Puerta de salida.

La tripulación apareció en un momento y unos minutos más tarde comenzó el embarque. Nos informaron que el vuelo de hoy iba a estar lleno y los agentes estaban solicitando la facturación de maletas. Como se trataba de un vuelo a los EE. UU. hubo un último control de seguridad antes de abordar el avión lo cual fue rápido. Al abordar por la puerta de entrada una azafata me dio la bienvenida a bordo y procedí hasta el final del avión

El sistema de entretenimiento era antiguo. UA decidió no instalar pantallas individuales en los 747.

El 744 es un avión viejo y el sistema de entretenimiento en la parte trasera de la cabina no funcionaba en absoluto por lo que los sobrecargos tuvieron que hacer una demostración de seguridad en vivo. Pude ver que todos los asientos estaban ocupados y este iba a ser un viaje lleno de gente con FA ayudando a los pasajeros a encontrar espacio de almacenamiento en los compartimientos superiores. Estuvimos atrapados en la puerta por unos buenos 45-60 min. debido a maniobras militares alrededor del aeropuerto. El capitán nos mantuvo al tanto de la situación. Finalmente se nos permitió despegar y cuando nos nivelamos el servicio de la cena comenzó seguido inmediatamente por un servicio de bebidas. Pedí una comida hindú y esto es lo que me presentaron.

Supongo que en PEK los dolmas se consideran hindúes.

Después de terminar mi comida le pregunté a la FA si sería posible probar una comida normal. Ella me trajo un plato de cerdo con una sonrisa.

Una vez que se recogieron todas las bandejas se distribuyeron helados y una botellas de agua.

Las pantallas superiores comenzaron a presentar una película y de repente se congelaron y se quedaron así por mucho tiempo. Finalmente fueron apagados.

Snacks.

Refrigerio - sandwich vegetariano. Yuck!

Pedi por un sandwich de pavo.

Después del servicio de comidas los FA se retiraron y aparecieron una vez más para la comida previa a la llegada. Hubo una fuerte turbulencia durante este tiempo por lo que los sobrecargos hicieron un servicio rápido y limitaron las bebidas calientes hasta la mitad del vaso para aquellos que querían café o té.

WC. Limpio pero sin cosméticos.

Según mi investigación los dos hoteles más cercanos a T3 @ PEK son el Hilton y Langham. Elegí el aeropuerto Langham PEK para pasar la noche. Después de haber estado en una de sus propiedades en Londres hace mucho tiempo en la década de 1990's estaba algo familiarizado con la marca y sabía qué esperar El shuttle tomó unos buenos 20-25 min para llegar al aeropuerto y una vez que llegamos hice una fila para registrarme. Uno de los agentes de recepción llamó a un dispositivo e inmediatamente apareció otro personal la cual me ayudó.

La habitación era espaciosa bien equipada cómoda y con una gran vista como descubrí a la mañana siguiente.

Vista desde el cuarto.

Abrí la ventana por un momento y al cerrarla veo escombros cayendo al suelo.

Miro hacia arriba y me encuentro con esto.

Saliendo del hotel.

Summary:

Me complació haber tenido la oportunidad de visitar el salón de Business de la CA y no me pareció tan terrible como pensaban algunos críticos. Había muchos asientos vacíos cuando llegué y, aunque el servicio de comidas podía mejorarse se aprecia que intentaran ofrecer una variedad de platos locales y calientes. Los baños estaban relativamente limpios y el personal se apresuró a recoger los platos sucios.

La oportunidad de volar en el 744 no tuvo precio ya que se anunció que el avión sería retirado pronto para cuando tomara este vuelo. Los dos asientos posteriores estaban relativamente cómodos.. La tripulación fue amable e hizo el trabajo de manera eficiente. El catering era aceptable y los platos sabian decente.

Recibí un correo electrónico de UA cuando llegué disculpándose por el mal funcionamiento del IFE y ofreciéndome 5000 millas en mi cuenta o un descuento de USD 100 para un viaje futuro. UA fue muy proactivo en la forma en que manejó la situación del IFE y me dejó una impresión positiva. Opté por el descuento para un futuro viaje en otro 744.

Yes, it is incredible. I guess that is why they were retired. ;) But no worries, I have an active imagination and can think of something to entertain myself. : P

Hi Adan, thanks for that review. My goodness, no IFE and I assume nowhere to plug your devices. Yeah the lounge seems decent enough as well as the meal.

I would take the 744 with or without IFE any day. ;) At least they try at the CA lounge and the bar is self service.

I can pack a punch if needed. ;) Lounge is average - Not the best but not the worst either. Can't complain too much about the meal on UA. It used to be terrible before but now is somewhat edible. On top of that I got 2 main dishes so I'm happy.

The photo of the cabin caught me by surprise ! . It reminds me of my teenage-flight-years on Air France, between FdF and Ory;)
Today millennials can't imagine these IFE^^ And we were happy and lucky: the onboard magazines were so exciting.

Catering was correct.
Interesting view of your room at the hotel .. Was it noisy ?

Woof Francis,

These old cabins were so spacious. Seats back then were very well cushioned and felt comfortable unlike some "ironing boards" that pass as seats nowadays. I always looked forward to seeing the onboard magazines. I used to get some from the airline ticket offices after school when I was in Costa Rica and thought that AF and AZ had really nice ones.

The view from the room was great and I could seat by the window the whole morning just looking at the planes land. The room was soundproof and I couldn't hear the noise.
