Prologue:

Welcome to this trip report to warm Hawaii on a chilly February day. When AS purchased VX it assumed many of its routes at SFO and this one to HNL is one of those so I was really looking forward to it.

We arrived at the airport with plenty of time and proceeded to check in at the F counter. I was flying with "oauf" on this trip.

We were helped by a nice agent and soon were on our way to security.

AS has a cart parked in front of the counters with sanitary supplies like wipes and masks. I think this is a nice and thoughtful gesture on the airline's part.

After security there was this display celebrating Chinese New Year.

AS lounge which used to be AA back when they were at this terminal. AS is the only US domestic airline that grants lounge access to F pax. The rules have changed somehow and now short hauls no longer qualify for this benefit. I believe that you need to be in F on a flight over 2.100 miles now.

Lounge is comfortable and just the right size for AS.

I ordered a strawberry drink which was a special of the month.

photo 640x640 3

Unfortunately AS doesn't use glasses or plates so everything is served in disposable material.

Boarding commenced in an orderly fashion and we were one of the first ones to step into the plane. A charming crew greeted pax at the door.

Our seats in row 2. Blanket but no pillow were on each seat.

Crew sprung into action after we leveled. I ordered a P.O.G. (passionfruit-orange-guava) drink that is only served on the Hawaiian flights and sparkling wine to toast.

photo 640x640 3

Cheers.

photo 640x640 3

Double cheers!

photo 640x640 3

Tray table - no table cloth like HA.

photo 640x640 3

AS allows pax to pre-order meals which is a great feature. The crew that served us was friendly and efficient.

photo 640x640 3

I ordered the shakshuka egg with lentils which had a "kick".

photo 640x640 3

Egg was served with toast on top.

Fruit appetizer.

photo 640x640 3

I ordered a tomato juice. Instead of real lemons AS uses a powder version.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki. This hotel is really across from the beach and in front of the Westin Moana Surfrider. I found the staff to be friendlier and less uptight than at the Moana.

Nice hotel consisting of 2 separate towers. It is a very open layout.

Summary:

AS proved to be a nice experience although not quite as good as HA. No pre-dept drinks, no pillows or printed menus. The blanket provided was quilted and good quality. The crew was really friendly and that's a big plus.

Oh a AS lounge in SFO, while it does exist it does appear to be up to their SEA lounge which makes sense.
All in all a good trip, thanks my friend.

AS planned to build a new 2-floors lounge in SFO before COVID as a showcase for its new SFO hub when they bought VX. Then the pandemic hit and those plans were put on hold. Given how AS has been cutting flights out of SFO it is not surprising that those plans for a bigger lounge were set aside and they decide to make the best out of this empty space that AA left when they moved to a new terminal.

Not bad but not great either^^
You can get into a lounge, it's already great.

That's the main advantage of AS - lounge access that no other domestic airline gives when you fly in F.

    Hi Panda!

A performance better than AA but much worse than HA.
Another amazing bonus that makes me dream!!!

AS is a good compromise between AA and HA. Oauf seems to love AS. :P Hawaii is a great destination for sure. Everyone should visit at least once.
