Prologue:

Welcome to this trip report on Hawaiian First. The opportunity was presented when I was searching for a trip to HNL for the weekend and I happen to find award inventory for 40.000 miles + USD 5 in taxes. The normal fare was over $1000+ per person and V13 was flying with me for the occasion.

Imagine my surprise when I saw 2 award seats for this flight which tends to be full because of the convenient time and I immediately booked them. After I did that I saw the award seats jump to 80.000 miles per person.

After a couple of days in paradise we were dropped off by Uber to HNL T1 where Hawaiian is the main carrier. The line to see an agent was long so we used the self check in kiosks to get the boarding passes and tag the bags. Then we made a quick line to drop them off to an agent. There are not many counters staffed with agents to check in pax here. I guess HA wants to encourage pax to use the kiosks instead.

Boarding pass with Premier Club access printed. HA operates 2 lounges in HNL - Plumeria and Premier. The first is for intl pax in J and Priority Pass members and the second is for those on domestic F. Both are below average.

Not a lot of people to go through security but the staff in charge of checking the bags as they pass through x-ray took his time to look at this screen. Bags took a bit of time to come to the other side.

Premier Lounge

We tried to access the Plumeria lounge which offered some food through Priority Pass but the waiting time was over 30 min. Even when flying on HA F domestic did not give us any consideration and we had to wait like the rest of the other members. As our boarding time got closer we decided to just forget it and went to the Premier lounge instead.

There is nothing "premier"about this lounge. It's just a glorified holding area with free drinks but at least it is better than waiting at the gates.

We had to walk to another terminal for mainland flights and during this process your bags are x-ray again by US Agriculture.

HNL is an open terminal so you get views of the planes parked.

Boarding commenced in a very orderly way allowing pax with disabilities and family to board first followed by those in F.

The F cabin on HA A330 with very unique seats that I have never seen on other airlines.

The seats are great for couples but lack some privacy. I imagine that it will be hard for the person on the window to get out if the neighbor is sleeping in lie flat mode.

Pillow and blankets were wrapped and on the seats.

The design for the foot rest is a bit odd.

Service was very efficient and a second round of drinks followed.

Everything served in one tray. We both had the steamed chicken.

Dessert was excellent.

HA should offer a warm bread basket selection instead of just placing a piece of taro bread on the tray.

Summary:

We had a great flight on Hawaiian and the seats were very comfortable although the privacy is not quite there compared to other premium cabins with solo seats. Since the merger with Alaska the parent company plans to use some of these A330's for the new intl routes from SEA to ICN and NRT.

This cabin might be great for a domestic flight but I don't think it is quite the same for a transpacific one. Time will tell.

Crew was very efficient and professional but not very engaging. The food service is fine but I think there is room for improvements. Overall I think HA is the best company to fly in the front between the US mainland and Hawaii.
